Sri Lanka president set for victory in bitter poll battle

COLOMBO (AFP) – Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse looked set for victory Wednesday in a bitterly fought election, as troops surrounded the hotel housing his main rival, who appealed for foreign protection.

With nearly 85 percent of ballots counted, official results showed Rajapakse, 64, had already secured more than 50 percent of the total 9.84 million votes cast.

Salaries of Teachers & Principals increased with arrears

The salaries of Teachers and Principals have been increased, Education Minister Susil Premjayantha announced this afternoon at a media briefing held at the Government Information Department.

These increased salaries are in sequence to the circular mooted to give effect from July 2008 by which the recipients will enjoy the privilege of an accumulated arrears

The increase will vary from Rs1005 to Rs. 2685. In addition an allowance of Rs 645 recommended by a court ruling will also be paid. firstlanka.com
